FILM FEST PREVIEW

This year we again showcase an eclectic mix of the latest movies and interesting themes. The program is packed full of great features including dramas, thrillers, romance, comedies and documentaries. Many of them will be screened to the Australian public for the very first time and two will even have their international premieres.


The 5-time 2018 Czech Lions Award winner Barefoot directed by the highly acclaimed Jan Svěrák, willhave its Australian premiere and open the festival with our gala evening at Dendy Opera Quays on Wednesday, 16th of May.

Among the highlights of the festival is without a doubt Sean Ellis’ historical thriller Anthropoid, an extraordinary true story about the efforts of a handful of Czechs to kill the Reich's 3rdin command, SS General Reinhard Heydrich.

Győrgy Kristóf comedy debut Out is a modern-day odyssey of Ágoston,a down on his luck50-year-old Hungarian Slovak family man in search of work luck in a foreign country. It tugs at the audience’s heartstrings and will no doubt find many sympathisers among the expats and new immigrants in the audience.

Our other comedy drama offering is the cinematic gem Larks on a String by the Oscar winning director JiříMenzel. Banned from screening for 20 years, its satirical portrayal of the absurdity of authoritarian regimes will be a delight to see on the big screen.

From the old to the very new, the comedy-satire President Blanik by director Marek Najbrt offers a close-up of political wheeling dealing of modern day presidential elections where campaign platforms include lithium for everyone and selling the country.

On The other hand, Forget Mozart is an intriguing mystery of the great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart death. Forman's Amadeus only speculated on the probable causes of Mozart's passing, the Slovak-German movie goes several steps further.

And of course, the festival would not be complete without our very popular children’s fairy tale or the accompanying program of shorts and animations.


This year’s not to be missed children’s adventure feature for small and big kids alike is the wonderful Oddsockeaters.
